Commercial Pilot oral
Complex aircraft systems — commercial pilot oral exam questions
If your commercial ride is in a complex airplane, the systems questions go deeper: how the constant-speed propeller governs, how the landing gear extends and retracts, and what fails and how you would know.
The examiner wants the "why," not just the "what" — why you set prop before throttle, what the governor does when oil pressure drops, what happens to a hydraulic gear system when the pump fails.
Then a scenario: the gear will not come down, or a green light does not illuminate. Walk through the checklist and the manual extension.
Questions you’ll get
- 1Explain how the constant-speed propeller works. What holds the blades in the low-pitch, high-RPM position?
- 2You lose engine oil pressure. What does the propeller do, and why?
- 3Trace the landing gear system. Is it hydraulic, electric, or both? What is the backup?
- 4You select gear down and get two greens and no third. Walk me through it.
- 5Describe the emergency gear extension procedure for this airplane.
- 6Why do we set propeller RPM before manifold pressure on the power increase, and reverse on the decrease?
- 7What is the difference between a gear warning horn triggered by throttle position versus flap position?
- 8What are the airspeed limitations for gear operation and gear extended, and where are they marked?
Walk in ready
Learn the specific complex airplane you are testing in — gear system type, backup method, prop governor behavior on oil-pressure loss — from its POH, and be able to hand-fly the emergency gear extension from memory.
