Aircraft systems — private pilot oral exam questions
Systems questions start with "trace it for me" — the fuel from the tank to the cylinder, the electrical from the battery to the bus, the pitot-static plumbing to the three instruments it feeds.
The examiner is looking for a mental model, not memorized part numbers. You should be able to explain what each system does, how you would know it failed, and what you would do about it in flight.
Expect a scenario: carburetor ice on a clear day, an alternator failure at night, a static port blockage in the clouds. They want the indications, the immediate actions, and the reasoning.
Questions you’ll get
- 1Trace the fuel system from the tanks to the engine. What feeds it — gravity, pump, or both?
- 2It is 70 °F and clear. Can we get carburetor ice? Walk me through recognizing and clearing it.
- 3The alternator fails 30 minutes into a night cross-country. What do you shed, how long do you have, and where are you going?
- 4What three instruments does the pitot-static system feed? What happens to each if the static port blocks?
- 5Explain the ignition system. Why two magnetos, and why do we check them on run-up?
- 6What type of engine is this, and what are its published limitations for RPM, oil temp, and CHT?
- 7How does the vacuum system work and which instruments depend on it? How would you fly without it?
- 8Describe the electrical bus structure. What is on the essential bus and why?
Walk in ready
Learn your airplane’s actual systems from the POH, not a generic diagram. Be able to draw the fuel and electrical paths on scratch paper and narrate a failure of each — indications first, then actions, then plan.
